How to join Mensa

The only criterion for the Mensa membership is to score in the top 2% on a standardised intelligence test. You can take a supervised, standardised test in your area with one of our Test Officers, or you can submit evidence of prior testing in the form of scores from a supervised, standardised test (online tests are not accepted).

In addition to this single criterion there are a few more conditions to become a member of Mensa Switzerland:

  • You live in Switzerland or you have the Swiss citizenship.
  • You agree that your address will be visible to all members, just as their addresses will be visible to you.
  • You pay the annual membership fee (society year starts on 1st of July).

Do The Mensa IQ Test

The Mensa IQ Test, supervised by a certified Test Officer, is offered at varying times in many locations. You can find the list with the upcoming tests here. The Mensa IQ test costs 80 CHF (40 CHF for students and pupils) and is aimed at anyone who is 15 years and older.

If you have failed the test, there is the possibility to redo it once after a waiting period of minimum one year.

Submit the Evidence of Prior Testing

Applicants present the evidence of scoring in the top 2% of the general population on a supervised, standardized intelligence test. If the applicant was not yet 10 years old at the time of the testing, the test results are valid for the admission to the Mensa via prior evidence for maximum 4 years. Unsupervised tests or online tests cannot be accepted.

After the arrival of the required documents they will be checked by our leading psychologist: Complies the test the quality claims of Mensa? Has it been performed properly? Which IQ scale was used for the results? All evidence of prior testing will be evaluated individually, and Mensa reserves the right to make the final decision on the eligibility of the test. These evaluations may take up to three weeks.

The costs of the evaluation will be CHF 80 for adults (CHF 40 for students). The evaluation of the evidence of prior testing for children and teenagers under the age of 18 is free of charge. The name on the documents must match the name on the application. If not, a supplementary document must be included (notarised copy of a marriage license or court records).

All information is treated as strictly confidential. Once eligibility of the prior evidence has been confirmed, Mensa will issue an invitation for you to join.

Applicants are asked to submit evidence including:

  • Name, address and birth date (email address or phone number in case we need to contact you)
  • A report by the psychologist/practice/institution that administered the test, including:
    • The testing date
    • The full name of the test and if possible the IQ scale used (mean and standard deviation)
    • The full IQ score and percentile rank (subtest scores if applicable)
    • The name and original signature of the responsible psychologist/psychiatrist
  • For adults a proof of payment of CHF 80 (CHF 40 for students – copy of student card has to be sent with the request) on postal account 12-16309-1 Mensa Switzerland (remark "prior test fee")

The report must be sent in original with the original signature from the responsible specialist (which you will get back only at explicit wish after the evaluation) or as a notarised copy (costs usually around CHF 20).

Mail (per post) your documentation to:  Isabel Hotz, Kalchbühlstrasse 43, 8038 Zürich.
